SMS Scams on the Rise with Fraudulent Links

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has alerted the public about a rise in SMS scams. According to a report by Chino Gaston on 24 Oras, these scams often involve fraudulent alerts claiming unauthorized use of your card or fake messages from the MMDA.

We’ve also highlighted the growing number of scam schemes emerging through SMS. Personally, I’ve noticed a significant increase in SMS messages with clickable links this month compared to previous months.

These messages vary from fake delivery notices to fraudulent MMDA violations. Many of them also feature enticing offers about gambling and cashbacks, all containing suspicious links.

Recently, I’ve received messages stating that my SSS benefits have expired and urging me to click a provided link to avoid termination. Additionally, another message offered almost PHP 2K, instructing me to verify my employer’s payment method through a link. These messages are part of a growing trend of deceptive tactics used by scammers to lure unsuspecting individuals into clicking malicious links.

According to a report from GMA Integrated News, the CICC advises the public to avoid posting photos of their IDs, bank accounts, credit cards, and billing statements online. If you have issues with your bank account, contact your bank manager directly and never share your digital wallet or bank details with strangers.
