Shopee Warns Sellers of Mercury-Laden Products

Shopee Philippines, which is an e-commerce platform, said it was taking steps to stop non-compliant goods from being listed on its site.

EcoWaste Coalition, a non-governmental group working to get mercury out of makeup and skin care products, says that Shopee is in trouble for allowing the sale of mercury-containing skin care products.

Shopee Philippines said, “We take a proactive approach to prevent the listing of such items through manual and automated measures, which includes blacklisting of keywords associated with products that are flagged as containing high levels of mercury.”

Shopee tells people that it has “screening measures” and that it regularly checks for and removes goods that don’t follow its rules.

Shopee stated that the company have teams that keep track of goods that have been warned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Also, Shopee has teams that go through all of the things and make sure they are taken down, especially those that the government has warned against.

In June, EcoWaste Coalition asked online shopping sites like Shopee and Lazada to stop selling skin care and whitening goods with a lot of mercury in them.

EcoWaste said that some sellers intentionally list goods that don’t follow the rules by just changing the name of the product.

The sellers will be punished based on how many Seller Penalty Points they get, which will depend on how bad the violation was. For each post or advertisement that is against the rules, the seller will lose two points.

The seller with the most penalty points will, among other things, be kicked out of marketing efforts, have their shipping rebates taken away, and have their accounts frozen.

Lazada hasn’t said anything yet.
