Riders Under Flyovers Face P1,000 Fine Starting August 1

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has given more information about its new plan to fine motorcycle riders who take cover under flyovers and underpasses when it rains.

The government says that from August 1, 2023, riders who do not follow the rules will be fined. And instead of the ₱500 that Romando Artes, the head of the agency, said earlier, the MMDA has made it clear that the fine for causing this kind of traffic jam will be ₱1,000 under the single-ticketing system.

At a news conference on July 20, Artes also said that the MMDA has talked to gas stations about putting up tents where riders can shelter when it rains.

Gas stores are open to new ideas, but MMDA can’t force them to make a choice right away. Gas companies are also worried about how long riders can stay on the property and the usage of their phones while waiting out the rain.

Gas stations also asked MMDA for a clear plan, especially about how tents should look and how big they should be. As we all know, gas stations have different sizes and designs of tents.

Artes also asked motorcycle-taxi companies to impose administrative sanctions on their partner motorcycle riders who break traffic rules.

Trying to get out of the rain may put riders in danger of being hit by other cars and cause traffic congestion.
