Xiaomi hasn’t been entirely quiet regarding the details surrounding the successors of the Redmi K30 Series. The company started with the news of confirming that the Redmi K40 Series is indeed in the works already. Then, they followed it up with a teaser image of the official retail box, with the packaging indicating the removable of the in-box charger. However, the most interesting teaser was the poster that confirmed the price of the Redmi K40 Pro; at CNY 2999(~Php22,000), Xiaomi claims it’s the cheapest Snapdragon 888 phone to be released. The upcoming flagship killer will launch on February 25, but two more models may be more exciting.
Dubbed as the Redmi K40 and Redmi K40S, the former has been confirmed to sport the Snapdragon 870 chipset. It’s not as good as the 888, but it’s better than the 865+ of last year. And according to the latest leak, the K40 will use the same 6.81″ 1440p AMOLED with a 144Hz refresh rate. What will separate the standard model from the pro is the use of 8MP ultrawide and 5MP telephoto lenses, but the 108MP main sensor and 30MP selfie will stay.
Based on a different report, a cheaper K40 would serve as the third model of the series; it would be called the Redmi K40s. Instead of a Qualcomm chip, it would sport MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200. Other than that, there was no mention of other specs. If proven to be real, the K40 and K40s may start under ~Php20,000 since the Pro model will only start at ~Php22,000.
All we can say for now is that we can’t wait for the Redmi K40 to arrive on February 25th. If Xiaomi manages to keep their local prices the same for the global market, it may become a problem for Realme and other OEMs.
