On January 4, 2024, Nokia happily announced a fresh collaboration with Honor through a 5G patent cross-license agreement.
This deal involves sharing their key innovations in 5G and other cellular technologies. The specific terms of the agreement are confidential.
Susanna Martikainen, Chief Licensing Officer Mobile Devices at Nokia, expressed her joy, highlighting this as the fourth significant smartphone agreement Nokia has sealed in the past year. She emphasized Nokia’s robust patent portfolio, rooted in decades of contributions to cellular standards.
Wenyu Zhou, Head of Global Intellectual Property at Honor, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Honor’s commitment to respecting intellectual property rights. He stressed the importance of reasonable IP value for the mobile industry’s development.
Nokia’s patent strength comes from over €140 billion (PHP8.5 trillion) invested in research and development since 2000.
Their portfolio boasts around 20,000 patent families, including 6,000 essential to 5G. Nokia encourages innovation by licensing these technologies under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.
In the spirit of open collaboration, this agreement allows companies to use these technologies without hefty investments in standards, fostering innovation and new products for consumers.
