LTFRB Approves PHP1 Fare Hike For Jeepneys

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has given the green light to a temporary PHP1 fare increase for jeepneys, set to be implemented from October 8.

This adjustment comes amidst ongoing reviews of a proposed PHP5 fare hike request put forth by major transport organizations, including Pasang Masda, the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations, and the Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Associations of the Philippines.

Transport groups have been advocating for fare hikes due to the relentless surge in fuel prices witnessed over 11 consecutive weeks. As a result, the current PHP12 minimum fare is set to rise to PHP13 starting October 8.

LTFRB Public Information Officer Rowena Dincol has announced that a hearing regarding the PHP5 fare hike request is scheduled for November 7, indicating a further possible fare adjustment. Earlier in August, transport groups, including:

  • Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas (LTOP)
  • Piston, Stop & Go Transport Coalition Inc., and Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations of the Philippines (Fejodap)

formally urged the LTFRB to approve a PHP2 increase in jeepney fares, considering the persistent surge in petroleum product prices.

Moreover, the LTFRB has emphasized that operators and drivers must continue to provide mandated discounts for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, students, and other eligible individuals as required by law. This development aims to address the economic challenges faced by the public transport sector while ensuring the continued accessibility of transportation services for vulnerable groups.
