As of 2023, all Windows 11 PCs will need solid-state drives instead of hard disk drives. Tom’s Hardware published a report claiming that the Redmond-based tech giant is pushing OEMs to mandatorily switch from HDDs to SSDs for primary storage.
Today, most Windows laptops feature hybrid storage systems, including hard disk drives and solid-state drives. The former offers faster loading times and data transfers for bulk storage. The latter, on the other hand, enables performance enhancements. According to the report, Microsoft had plans to make SSDs a standard this year, but the exact date is not yet known. But, SSDs will likely be switched over during the second half of 2023.
SSDs are expensive compared to spinning drives, so switching from HDD to SSD would result in higher PC prices. The additional costs will likely be passed along to the customer as they increase the price of laptops and PCs.
However, it is pretty expensive to buy a PC with hybrid storage and only SSDs. In addition, leading companies such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, and more also offer affordable models with only an HDD storage option. Fortunately, those on a tight budget can still choose models with eMMC storage.
On the other hand, SSDs are already incorporated into Apple’s Mac and MacBook computers.
