A group of social media broadcasters has lodged a criminal complaint against drag artist Pura Luka Vega. The charges center around the alleged violation of Article 113 of the Revised Penal Code, specifically for offending religious feelings, in connection with the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
Pura Luka Vega, was also previously arrested on charges related to controversial performance of the “Ama Namin” (Our Father) prayer.
The Kapisanan ng mga Social Media Broadcasters ng Pilipinas Inc. (KSMBPI) initiated this legal action. Their lawyer, Mark Tolentino, shared the details of the case on his personal Facebook account.
The controversy stemmed from a video on Pura Luka Vega’s TikTok account, in which the drag artist was seen dancing while holding a sacred host and wearing a Black Nazarene-inspired costume. The KSMBPI expressed deep offense, particularly in a predominantly Catholic country.
The performance garnered backlash from the public and religious groups, but the drag artist is currently out on bail.
This case has sparked a significant debate about the boundaries of artistic expression and religious sensitivities.
