In the past, the bulky and robust-looking the phone looks, the better. Which is why manufacturers and cellphone companies in the past would prefer a bigger and bulkier look on their phone. The height of cell phone popularity slowly transitioned over to portability, though, as phones became steadily smaller and smaller in size. Making portability, a better factor for cell phones that bulkiness.
On the smartphone side, things are rather opposite. Smartphones started off as 4-inchers and has eventually gained a huge market over the years, thanks to their various features. This gave smartphone users the idea of making the screens bigger for the users to be able to maximize the features in full-view. Thus, 5 and 6-incher smartphones were fully introduced.
Cell phones back then are pretty straightforward when it comes to their function. Call and text functions where usually the normal features seen on older models, however as time goes by, added features like reminder notes, alarm clocks and even a camera function eventually found its way to various cell phones.
If cell phones started off with minimal functions, then the reverse can be said on smartphones. Unlike cellphones who only had limited features and functions, smartphones already have all the newer functions of cell phones, but with a few added bonuses, like the capability of accessing the internet or even the usage of applications. This made smartphones a more diverse option than cellphones.
When cell phones were first introduced, they can only be described as “costing more than one makes”, which is quite an understatement. Back in the 1980s, having a cell phone in hand is actually a form of “status symbol” signifying that you’re at the upper class of the social ladder when you have one. It was costly and since its commercialization, cell phones were eventually shortened in the price range.
When smartphones were introduced, the handsets faced similar scenarios as cell phones. Since they function more than just a mere phone, smartphones were immediately dubbed as a very costly device in the past. Similar to cell phones, they were also dubbed as “status symbols” for the upper classmen, thanks to Apple’s prestige introduction to the iPhone lineup. However, with various smartphones being developed and introduced every year, budget smartphones and mid-rangers eventually found their way in the market and was eventually seen to make smartphones an all-around normal device to carry.
