Today it is undoubtedly the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which is just now starting preorders and ships in September. It has a 12mp duel camera setup with 10x digital zoom 2x optical zoom also that works in tandem and also an 8 megapixel front camera (an industry leading feature). It also has true optical image stabilization (OIS) like very high end sport cameras. All that in a very thin phone.

Yes the note does have optical zoom.
It is only 3x of course. Any larger and they would need a thicker phone, but it does indeed have optical zoom. Optical zoom is where the actual lens moves to zoom in or out instead of trying to duplicate it digitally, which is what nearly all cameras (the ones in cell phones) have done up to this point. It has always provided better focus. Real high end cameras always have optical zoom. The picture quality is always a lot better because it is a technology that is fully developed and one that has been used since the camera was first invented. Digital zoom still can not match it and maybe never will. There are limitations to every technology.
