911 Philippines Hotline receiving more Prank Calls, PNP to arrest violators

The Philippines becomes one of the few countries who will facilitate 911 as Emergency Hotline while some countries only use it for specific hotlines like ambulance call and other medical emergencies.

With the 911 going live today, the service center has expected received thousands of calls during the first hours with most calls translating to prank and dropped lines than legitimate concerns. This is unavoidable since most mobile users are on unregistered prepaid numbers.

On the latest information, PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa pointed that out of 2,700+ calls in the morning, only 75 calls are legitimate while about 300 calls are confirmed as pranked. The rest of the number either translated to dropped calls and line cuts.

As of the moment, both telcos and the government do not have clear plans yet on how to reduce the prank calls aside from arresting the identified violators.

For non-emergency concerns, the Philippine government urges the rest to use 8888 for any citizen complaint. Meanwhile, 117 emergency hotline is still in transition to 911. After the transition, 117 will direct all calls to 911.

What measures do you think would help in reducing these prank and dropped calls? Let’s know in the comments.
